Dense black smoke billowed across the the skyline on the east side of Monticello Thursday afternoon as firefighters from a half dozen area fire departments and the Arkansas Forestry Commission battled a massive fire at the former Burlington factory on East Jackson Street.

By nightfall, flames from the still burning buildings lit the night sky. The buildings have been burning since shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday. The photo immediately below was taken at 7:30 p.m. on the north side of the buildings. The following photo (on the  bottom) was taken by Mark Ray around 6 p.m. from a different vantage point (on the south side of the buildings).
