University of Arkansas at Monticello senior football player Mike Early has been recognized by the Great American Conference for a second time this season by being named the league’s defensive player of the week for his efforts in a 33-14 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Early hauled in two interceptions in win over SWOSU and tallied a combined total of 68 return yards. His first interception was returned 23 yards for a touchdown to give UAM a 16-7 lead over the Bulldogs with 4:55 remaining in the second quarter. It was his fourth touchdown scored this season, and Early now ranks third on the team with a total of 24 points scored through the first four games of the year.
The Denham Springs, Louisiana native picked off a second SWOSU pass in the third quarter, this time grabbing the ball at the back of the end zone and returning it 45 yards to negate a red zone scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs.
Early was also in on three pass breakups in the win and added two tackles to his final totals.
Early was named GAC Special Teams Player of the Week after the first game of the season after having two kickoff returns for touchdowns in a loss to East Central at home.
