A missing Chicot County man reportedly hunting in the Cut-off Creek Lower Weir Access area in Drew County was located Wednesday and reunited with his family, according to Lt. Tim Nichols, a criminal investigator with the Drew County Sheriff’s Office.
Fred Cunningham’s family reported the 78-year-old man missing Tuesday afternoon when they had not heard from him in more than four hours and could not locate him at his deer stand or in the surrounding area. His truck was discovered just off the road of their hunting lease, Nichols said.
Search teams, the Arkansas Game and Fish, and an Arkansas State Police helicopter using inferred imaging, were unable to locate Cunningham due to thick foliage and the foot search was called off at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday due to the darkness.
About five hours later while en route to the area to resume the search, Nichols said he saw Cunningham’s truck being driven down the road. It was Cunningham.
Cunningham had walked up on a logging crew working in the area. The logging crew, unaware that he had been reported missing, gave him a ride to his truck.
Cunningham was reunited with his family and checked out for any medical issues.
Agencies involved in the search were Arkansas Game and Fish, Arkansas State Police, Monticello Fire and Rescue, Collins-Comminto Fire Department, Drew County Office of Emergency Management, Chicot County Office of Emergency Management, Chicot County Sheriff’s Office.
