Former Monticello Mayor Joe Rogers reversed the results of a June 24 special election and captured a narrow 60-vote win over Zack Tucker in Tuesday night’s runoff for mayor.

Rogers, an independent, garnered 53 percent of the vote to Tucker’s 47 percent three weeks after the 25-year-old mayor’s assistant beat the 50-year-old former mayor in a 5-way special election, but fell short of the majority needed for the win.

In the June 24 special election, Tucker came out on top with 39 percent of the vote while Rogers received just over 27 percent. In that special election, Tucker carried the early and absentee votes as well as wards 2, 3 and 4 while Rogers carried Ward 1. Rogers managed to reverse that in Tuesday’s election, carrying the early and absentee votes as well as wards 1 and 3 while Tucker held on to his support in wards 2 and 4.

Thanking his supporters in a prepared statement, Rogers said he is humbled by the vote of confidence and will do his very best to represent all of the citizens of Monticello. He also called for unity as the city faces challenges with a $10 million water project that has raised questions from both citizens and some local officials.

“We are facing some major challenges here in Monticello with the water issue,” Rogers wrote. “This is a very important and expensive issue facing us and we need to meet this with unity of purpose and insure that the best interests of all the citizens of Monticello are best served. I will work with the city council, the municipal league and our attorney to insure the best resolution of this situation…”

Election results are unofficial until certified which is expected in about a week. Upon certification of the election results, Rogers will be sworn into office to complete the unexpired term of Allen Maxwell who died in March. The term ends on December 31, 2014.

Rogers, along with Tucker, Dave Nugent, Sonny Thornhill and Jo Ann Trotter, will also be on the ballot in November for the upcoming 4-year term for mayor. All but Tucker filed as independents.

Full text of Rogers’ written acceptance statement:

“First of all, I would like to thank everyone that participated in the runoff election today. I want to thank all of the people that worked so hard for me and supported me. This vote of confidence is very humbling and I will do my very best to represent all of the people of Monticello. We are facing some major challenges here in Monticello with the water issue. This is a very important and expensive issue facing us and we need to meet this with unity of purpose and insure that the best interests of all citizens of Monticello are best served. I will work with the city council, the municipal league and our attorney to insure the best resolution of this situation. The door to the mayor’s office will always be open. I invite your opinion and I need your continued support in the days and weeks ahead.”
