The Monticello Police Department is alerting the public of a scam in which someone is calling the parents of school children saying their child had been injured and is in the emergency room.

The calls were made to the parents of young children in the Monticello School District.

“If you receive one of these calls or texts, do not give any personal information to the caller,” said Monticello Police Chief Eddy Deaton. “Hang up and contact the school to verify there is not a problem with your child. Check your caller ID if you get one of these calls.”

So far, the calls are from a blocked number. If the school contacts you for a real emergency, it will show the school district’s name and number, Deaton said.
