Morgan Densmore of Monticello took first place in the 2014 Collegiate Farm Bureau Discussion Meet held recently at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Densmore is a sophomore in UAM’s School of Agriculture pursuing a bachelor of science degree in agriculture with a double major in agribusiness and plant and soil science. She received a cash prize and will represent UAM in the state finals of the Collegiate Discussion Meet during the State Collegiate Farm Bureau Conference in Little Rock.
Justin Calhoun of Star City received a cash prize for second place and will be the UAM alternate for the state finals. John Erickson of Chicago, Ill., and John David Farabough of Star City also received cash prizes for their local participation.
The Collegiate Meet is modeled after the statewide Young Farmer and Ranchers contest sponsored by the Arkansas Farm Bureau. Participants discuss a current agricultural issue in a committee meeting format. Points are given for analysis of the topic, problem solving and implementation, a cooperative attitude, and general delivery. Each participant makes individual opening and closing statements of their own composition with all participants engaging in a general discussion period.
The UAM Collegiate Farm Bureau co-sponsored the event with the Arkansas Farm Bureau. Moderator for the activity was Dr. Bob Stark, UAM CFB faculty advisor. Dr. Whitney Whitworth, associate professor of animal science, served as timekeeper. Judges were Clayton Stephens, Drew County Farm Bureau Insurance agent; Dr. Kelly Bryant, dean of the School of Agriculture; and Chris Bryant, a former UAM Collegiate Farm Bureau member and a participant at the state level in both the Collegiate Farm Bureau and AFB Young Farmer and Rancher discussion meets.
