Murl G. Bateman, Sr.

Murl G. Bateman, Sr., 84, of Pine Bluff, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2015 at his home.

Mr. Bateman was born at Monticello on August 12, 1931 and was the son of the late Vester Bateman and Beatrice Collins Bateman.

He was a United States Army veteran who served in the Korean War, three tours of duty in the Vietnam War, and four years in Germany. He received three bronze stars, a good conduct medal (3rd award), Army medal ARCOM Vietnam Service medal with 60 Dev, Aircraft Crewman Badge, and VSM NDSM (1st OLC).

Mr. Bateman enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and watching deer after becoming disabled. He kept count of the number of deer he saw over a period of three years in his backyard, totaling 1,052 in all.

He loved his grandchildren and was a very loving husband, father and friend. He was often referred to as the “Sheriff of Shannon Road”.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Anthony Bateman; a sister, Shirley Bateman Carpenter; and a granddaughter, Kelly Bateman Coburn.

Mr. Bateman is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred Davis Bateman; two sons, Murl Gene Bateman, Jr. and wife Terry, and Marc Devon Bateman and wife Debbie all of Pine Bluff; a daughter, Patricia Lynn Miller and husband Chuck of Magnet Cove; a sister, Elizabeth Bateman Hawkins of Orange, Texas; two brothers Robert Bateman of Monticello and Delbert Bateman of White Hall; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.

Visitation will be October 5 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Shannon Road Baptist Church, located at 6817 Shannon Road in Watson Chapel.

Funeral service will be held on October 6 at 10 a.m. at the church with Revs. Josh Blevins and Gene Triplett will officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be at Gaster Hill Cemetery, Highway 35 West in Monticello. Arrangements by Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home of Monticello.
