Five Drew County authors were honored by the Drew County NAACP at its annual banquet last week. In keeping with the banquet theme Living in the Shadow of a Dreamer, the organization recognized the local writers who had fulfilled their dreams of becoming successful book authors.
The five honorees were Sharon Shorter, a former Wilmar resident who wrote Taking Out the Trash; the Rev. Shay Gillespie, author of And a Little Child Shall Lead Them; Gaynell Jamison, author of three children’s books, Halloween Night, My Loose Tooth, and Where Can I Read?; and UAM faculty members Mark Spencer and Mary Heady, who collaborated on Images of America: Monticello.
U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor’s deputy state director Kymara Seals, of Hamburg, was the keynote speaker. Her speech was entitled “Daring to Dream.” Nearly 200 attended the banquet.
