An armed correctional officer at the Delta Regional Unit in Dermott who locked himself inside a guard tower Saturday and refused orders to leave the tower surrendered Saturday night.

No one was injured in the day-long standoff.

At approximately 11 a.m. State Police received a request seeking assistance from officials of the Arkansas Department of Correction. A correctional officer, Devonte McCarter, 24, of Greenville, Mississippi, who had access to a rifle, had refused orders to leave the guard tower, according to Arkansas State Police.

State Troopers and Department of Correction personnel established contact with the officer and began negotiations which continued until about 7:50 p.m. when he surrendered.

McCarter was arrested and transported to the Drew County Detention Center where he is facing commercial burglary charges, police said.
