A parolee was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly attacked another man with a knife at the Walmart Supercenter in Monticello, according to a news release from the Monticello Police Department.
Christopher Barfield, 25, of Monticello, is facing three felony charges, criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault and first-degree battery.
Around 11 p.m. Tuesday, Monticello police officers were dispatched to Walmart where they were directed by four witnesses to a man in a white pickup truck. The man was standing outside his vehicle and had a cut on his neck. He told police he did not know the man who assaulted him, according to police.
Several witnesses said they saw the suspect go to the victim’s truck and open the door. They said the suspect then walked into the Walmart store. Officers got a description of the suspect, and a witness saw the man exit the store. The officers then approached the man, later identified as Barfield, and ordered him to the ground. He was arrested and taken to the Drew County Detention Center were he is awaiting a first appearance hearing, according to the news release.
The victim, who police declined to immediately identify, was taken to Drew Memorial Hospital where he was treated. He received 15 staples, according to Monticello Police Chief Eddy Deaton.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
