Patsy Rose Combs Owens

Patsy “Pat” Rose Combs Owens, 84, of Crossett, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2020, at the St. Vincent Hospital Hospice following complications from a broken hip.

She was born on February 29, 1936, (Leap Year) in El Dorado to Floyd Cornelius Combs and Linnie Josephine Cessor Combs.

Pat grew up in El Dorado, attending Parkers Chapel school with her 21 first cousins as a child. Later her family moved to Pine Bluff where she graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1956 She attended Ouachita Baptist College for a year before moving to Crossett with her parents.

Pat worked as the first secretary for the newly opened Bemis Bag Company in Crossett before she met and married Crossett native Herman Owens. The couple married at Temple Baptist Church on February 24, 1956.

Pat began married life as a homemaker and an active member of the Crossett Junior Auxiliary, where she served as vice president. She also served as president of Anderson Elementary PTA.

In 1978, Pat opened a gift shop, “Pat’s Many Splendid Things”, serving Crossett for over 20 years with gifts, decor, candles, and flower arrangements and later adding wallpaper and blinds.

She became the first woman president of the Crossett Area Chamber of Commerce and served many years on the Crossett Retail Merchants Committee.

Pat had a passion for promoting the Crossett area and served on many boards, the Ashley County Industrial Development Corporation Board of Directors, Southeast Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, Crossett Youth Center, Chairman of the Ashley County Heart Association, and the Crossett Committee on Education.

In 1986, Pat opened the Trieschmann House Bed and Breakfast. She loved welcoming visitors to the historic home built in 1903 and opened the house for catered parties, civic groups, and social clubs.

Pat was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett and adored her church family. She taught High School Girls Training Union in the 70s, 5th grade Sunday School in the late 80s, and was a perpetual member of the church flower committee.

Amidst all of Pat’s business pursuits, civic service, and church service, her family always came first.

She will be missed beyond words by her husband of 64 years, Herman Owens of Crossett; along with her children, Rick Owens and wife, Cheryl, of Crossett, Rusty Owens and wife, Dana, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Misty Huerkamp and husband, Deron, of Arkadelphia; four grandchildren, Carson Owens, and Brock, Dalton, and Sumner Huerkamp; and two nephews, Rod and Charlie Combs.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Charles John Combs.

A Celebration Of Life Service will be held Wednesday, November 4 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Crossett, 701 Main Street, with Pastors Jamie Staley and David Newberry, officiating followed by interment at Unity Cemetery under the direction of Medders Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Deron Huerkamp, Dalton Huerkamp, Brock Huerkamp, Kurt Price, Adam Person and Milton Lovell.

Visitation will be in the in the sanctuary at 1 p.m. preceding the service.
