Hunter Laney, 25, of Pine Bluff was shot and killed around 2 a.m. Saturday as he sat in the driver’s seat of his vehicle at a gas station on U.S. 278 West. A female in Laney’s vehicle was wounded in the gunfire and taken to Drew Memorial Hospital. Another passenger in the vehicle was was not injured.
The wounded woman was not identified in news releases from State Police and Monticello Police Department.
Charlie H. Dobbins, 37, of Monticello, was arrested Saturday afternoon on probable cause of first-degree murder.
The shooting apparently stemmed from a dispute that began at a Monticello nightclub. Shortly before 2 a.m, Laney and one of the suspects got into an argument at a nightclub and security personnel at the club ordered them to leave. They left in separate vehicles and traveled west on U.S. 278 West, according to Monticello Police Chief Eddy Deaton.
As Laney’s vehicle pulled onto the parking lot of a gas station on U.S. 278 West, a light colored SUV truck followed and someone inside the SUV began shooting into Laney’s vehicle, striking two of three people inside, according to State Police.
Laney was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead by Drew County Deputy Coroner, Larry Scogins.
