The Drew County 2018 MLK Celebration Committee and Drew County NAACP has announced plans for the upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
The 3-day commemoration will be held Saturday, January 19, Sunday, January 20 and Monday, January 21.
The traditional MLK March and Breakfast will be held on Saturday. Participants will meet that the Monticello town square at 8:30 a.m. and march to breakfast and the celebration program at Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church, located at 527 E. McCloy. The breakfast guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Moses V. Goldmon, the vice chancellor for student engagement at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Adult tickets are $5. Youth up to the age of 18 will eat free. Churches are asked to make a donation of $25. For ticket and donation information, contact event coordinator, Brenda Binns at 870-723-0661.
On Sunday at 5 p.m., the MLK Youth Explosion and Trivia Contest will be held at Revival Center Church of God in Christ, located at 311 S. Pine Street. Drew County youth will display their talent and are welcome to participate in the MLK Trivia Contest. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. The master of ceremony will be Gabriel Pace of Monticello. Pace is a junior agri student at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a gospel singer.

The finale celebration will be held Monday night at 6 p.m. at Revival Center Church of God in Christ where Supt. Michael A. Jones is pastor. The music will be provided by the Drew County MLK Reunion Mass Choir. The mistress of ceremony will be Clarissa Pace, co-pastor of the Great I Am Temple Church in Monticello. The finale speaker will be LaShunda Jackson, a speech therapist, business owner, and minister of Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church.
The choir will rehearse on Saturday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 pm at Morning Missionary Baptist Church. Contact Clarissa Pace at 870.723.9820 to participate or meet at the appointed times. New participants are encouraged to participate.
