State Police and the McGehee Police Department are investigating a fatal hit and run that occurred Friday morning on U.S. 65, according to 10th Judicial District Prosecutor Thomas Deen.

The victim was identified as a 31-year-old Dermott man but his name was not immediately available. The driver of the vehicle that struck the man has not been identified, Deen said.

The man’s body was discovered in a ditch which parallels U.S. 65, near the McGehee Police Department. About three hours earlier, at 6:40 a.m., witnesses had seen him walking in the northbound lane of the highway, according to State Police spokesman Bill Sadler.

The body has been transported to the State Crime Laboratory for examination and State Police are collecting forensic evidence and witness statements in an attempt to identify the driver of a vehicle that may have struck the victim, Sadler said.

Police are also viewing video footage from security cameras at businesses along the highway in the area where the fatality occurred, according to Deen.
