Police are looking for leads in a rash of commercial burglaries over the last two months. All but one of the seven burglaries occurred at businesses along U.S. 425 in Monticello and police believe some are connected.
In late June, between June 26 and June 30, someone broke into the Western Sizzlin Restaurant, Pizza Hut, Topps Pizza, and the Tobacco Superstore.
The burglar, or burglars, took bank deposit bags containing cash in the Western Sizzlin and Pizza Hut break-ins, and a safe containing cash in the Topps Pizza burglary. Nothing was taken in the tobacco store burglary, according to Lt. John Dement, a criminal investigator with the Monticello Police Department.
The next month, Piggly Wiggly and Greenscape Nursery were burglarized. The burglar(s) took several cartons of cigarettes in the July 7 Piggly Wiggly burglary and a small amount of cash in the July 26 Greenscape Nursery burglary, Dement said.
In the most recent burglary, on August 7, someone broke into the AT&T store and stole 35 cell phones. Police have surveillance video from that burglary. All of the burglarized businesses, with the exception of the Piggly Wiggly store on South Main, are located on U.S. 425.
“We’ve got a theory on some of the burglaries and we recovered some physical evidence from a few of them,” Dement said.
He believes some of the burglaries were committed by “outsiders” who have since left town.
Asked about these “outsiders,” Dement said they were people in Monticello temporarily. He declined further comment because it is only a theory, police are not sure if those people committed the burglaries.
Anyone with information about any of the burglaries is asked to contact Dement or Lt. Greg Johnson at the Monticello Police Department.
