A 4:55 p.m. NOAA radar image shows dense smoke from a Drew County forest fire that burned more than 500 acres before it was initially contained Thursday evening. Though the fire appeared to be contained as late as 8:30 p.m., a strong wind gave it new life. Firefighers and fire dozers were still working to recontain the fire at 11:30 p.m.

Firefighters across Southeast Arkansas and two Arkansas Forestry Commission aircraft battled a forest fire near Wilmar throughout the afternoon and early evening. The two aircraft reloaded eight times each, dumping more than 16,000 gallons of water on the blazing fire.

An ambulance on U.S. 278 near Wilmar was on standby while firefighters battled the forest fire on the south side of the highway.
