The number of Covid-19 cases in Arkansas increased from Thursday to Friday by 731 — a new one-day record — as the state prepares to further lift restrictions put in place as a result of the disease.
Friday’s increase brings the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 11,547. There have been five more deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 176. The number of people hospitalized increased by 16 to 203. There are currently 3,764 active cases, Gov. Asa Hutchinson reported Friday at his daily Covid-19 news briefing.
Arkansas will move to Phase 2 of reopening on Monday, further lifting restrictions put in place as a result of the disease. Phase 2 allows businesses to operate at two-thirds capacity.
Asked if the sharp increase in cases has given him “second thoughts” about continuing to Phase 2 on Monday, Hutchinson said it hasn’t.
“There continues to be no indication of a connection between the increase in cases and the lifting of restrictions,” Hutchinson said. “And that’s what we continue to watch and that’s what helps guide our decision…”
