Sharing some grim statistics, the Monticello Safe Prom Committee is asking for donations to provide a safe prom night for students. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 48 teenagers are killed and 5,202 are injured in vehicle accidents on a typical prom weekend and 40 percent of those deaths are alcohol related.
“It is supposed to be one of the happiest days of our kid’s life, but for too many it turns into a horrible tragedy,” said Virginia Ward, chairman of the Monticello Safe Prom Committee.
Monticello Safe Prom will be held April 14 from 12:30 a.m. until 3:30 a.m. at National Guard Armory at 809 Jordan Drive in Monticello. The event will feature the Fabulous Steelers Band from Memphis, lots of prizes and breakfast.
“As parents and caregivers, it is sometimes necessary to protect our children from themselves,” Ward said. “Prom night is one of our last opportunities to do this. These kids are the future of Monticello and surrounding communities. Please help us in our endeavors to keep them safe on this wonderful night.”
