Lincoln County voters are being asked to consider a one-cent, county-wide sales tax to build a new jail to replace the county’s 40-year-old jail. The proposal is set for a May 22 vote.
The proposal, if approved, would allow the county to construct and equip a new 49-bed jail, communications center and law enforcement offices on county-owned property in Lincoln County.
The proposal calls for a 5/8 cent temporary sales tax that would allow the county to issue up to $6.6 million in bonds to pay for construction and furnishing of the new jail and law enforcement building, including any required infrastructure improvements. That tax would expire when the debt is paid. A second 3/8 cent permanent sales tax would be used to maintain and operate the jail and law enforcement building.
