Sammie Lee Tharpe, 90, of Crossett died July 3, 2014 at Life Touch Hospice in El Dorado.
Mr. Tharpe worked at G. P. plywood mill for many years until he retired. He was a man that loved his family dearly. He also enjoyed music, especially the blues. He enjoyed the days of playing his guitars and relaxing on his porch with family and friends.
Mr. Tharpe was born on March 15, 1924 at Wilmot and was the son of the late Norman and Nancy Tharpe. He was one of nine children, with three preceding him in death.
He is survived by four daughters, Julia Tharpe of Ohio, Burna Tharpe of Chicago, Ill., Vivian Sworn of Crossett, Annie (Jay) Williams of Crossett; two sons, Sammie Lee Tharpe Jr. of Hot Springs, Bennie Lee Tharpe of Jonesboro, La.; two brothers, Freddie Lee Tharpe of Crossett and Matthew Tharpe of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Eula V. Bankston, Perlean Rent, Beatrice Slack, all of Wilmot; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held July 9 at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Jesse Radford officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Wilmot under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Visitation will be held July 8 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
