A 72-year-old Hermitage woman was sentenced to 10 years in prison this week after a Bradley County jury convicted her of selling drugs to a Dumas woman in Warren on June 2, 2010.

Velma Doris Maxwell was found guilty of one count of hydrocodone delivery, a Class B felony, and one count of alprazolam (Xanax) delivery, a Class C  felony.

She received a six-year sentence and fined $1,000 for hydrocodone delivery and four-year sentence and $200 fine for alprazolam. The sentences will run consecutive. She will be eligible for parole in less than two years.

Charged as an habitual offender, Maxwell faced a maximum 40-year sentence and $15,000 fine for the hydrocodone sale and a maximum 30-year sentence and $10,000 fine for the alprazolam sale.

Tenth Judicial District deputy prosecutor Daren Nelson said Maxwell has well over 50 prior convictions, primarily theft.
