The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team pushes its win streak to seven games sweeping a doubleheader to open the series against Oklahoma Baptist. The Weevils held off the Bison late to take game one 7-6 before rallying down the stretch to pull away for a 12-8 victory in game two.

UAM improves to 17-14 overall on the season and 15-11 in Great American Conference play while OBU falls to 19-12 and 17-9.

GAME ONE: UAM 7, OBU 6

After a scoreless top half of the first inning, the Weevils fell behind early as OBU struck in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run against UAM starter Mason Philley.

The deficit grew for the Weevils in the fourth when the Bison added two more runs with another leadoff home run and a two-out RBI-double.

UAM put at least one runner aboard in each of the first four innings, but finally broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth. The first three batters reached to load the bases for Cade Thompson who drove in the first run for the Weevils with an RBI-single. Two hitters later Jordan Johnson knocked a one-run single into right field. Dylan Borman followed driving in a run and reaching on a fielder’s choice. An RBI-single by Aaron Gaela gave UAM its first lead and Hudson Hopkins pushed the score to 5-3 singling to center to bring home Borman.

Philley carried the momentum onto the mound for UAM working his first 1-2-3 frame of the contest in the bottom of the fifth. The bottom of the sixth was not as smooth for the lefty as OBU took advantage of two hits and an error to score two runs and tie the game.

Livan Cordova took over on the bump for the Weevils to start the seventh and promptly sat the Bison down in order.

In the next frame Andrew Piraino delivered the game-winning hit smashing a two-out two-run double to the base of the fence in center field.

Cordova retired OBU in order again in the eighth, but allowed the first two hitters to reach in the ninth which prompted UAM to turn to Ojani Chacon out of the bullpen. Chacon quickly recorded the first out of the frame before walking the bases loaded. After a strikeout for the second out the Bison cut it to a one-run game with an RBI-single on the infield. The Harlington, Texas product closed the door getting the next batter to pop up to first to end the game with UAM holding on to win 7-6.

The Weevils collected 10 hits in the contest as Piraino led the way going 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Cordova (W, 3-2) picked up the win allowing one unearned run and striking out three in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.

Chacon (S, 4) earned the save closing the door in the ninth with one strikeout and one hit allowed in 1.0 on the bump.

Philley worked 6.0 innings in the start giving up five runs, four earned, on seven hits while punching out seven.

Jesus Chavez (L, 0-3) ended with the loss surrendering two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings on the mound.

GAME TWO: UAM 12, OBU 8

In the second contest of the twin bill the Weevils were the first on the scoreboard jumping on the Bison pitching in the top of the first. Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases to start the frame before Borman launched a grand slam clearing the bases to put UAM up 4-0.

River Hunt allowed OBU to respond in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs on a the only hit of the frame.

UAM tacked on another run in the second on a leadoff home run by Grant Shepherd.

In the home half of the frame the Bison forced Hunt out of the game plating three runs on two hits with only one out in the inning. Lefty Jared Roberts took the mound in relief for the Weevils and picked up back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning tied 5-5.

The Weevils retook the lead in the fourth as Thompson drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Piraino followed with a sacrifice fly to put UAM up 7-5.

OBU responded with one run on two hits in the sixth, but UAM got the run back in the next frame on an RBI-single by Shepherd.

Roberts surrendered another run in the bottom of the fifth, but again the Weevils responded with a rally in the next inning.

Johnson started the scoring in the sixth roping an RBI-double into right field. Borman followed with a two-run double down the left field line to stretch the UAM lead to four. Four batters later Shepherd capped the frame scoring Borman with an RBI-single to center.

The Weevils turned to Connor Wilkerson out of the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth. The Hermitage, Arkansas native allowed one run on two hits in the frame.

Wilkerson returned to the mound in the seventh retiring the Bison in order closing out the game two win 12-8 for UAM.

Five different Weevils recorded a multi-hit effort in the contest with Shepherd leading the way going 4-for-4 and driving in three runs. Borman and Thompson each added a home run with the former picking up six RBI.

Roberts (W, 2-0) got the win pitching 3.2 innings and striking out eight while allowing two runs on four hits.

Hunt went 1.1 innings giving up five runs on three hits in the start on the mound.

Wilkerson finished the doubleheader sweep dealing 2.0 innings in relief allowing one run and punching out two.

Raul Rizo (L, 4-3) ended with the lost surrendering seven runs in 3.0 innings pitched.

April 25 – Weevils drop series finale at OBU

The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball drops the series finale on the road against Oklahoma Baptist in a back-and-forth slugfest Sunday. The Weevils hit four home runs in the contest, but ultimately could not hold off the Bison down the stretch falling 9-8 in game three.

UAM falls to 17-15 overall on the season and 15-12 in Great American Conference play while OBU moves to 20-12 and 18-9.

The Weevils jumped on the scoreboard early when Dylan Borman drove home Cade Thompson on an infield single to the shortstop.

Matt Lundh allowed the Bison to respond in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run to go in front.

In the second inning UAM bounced right back to retake the lead as Andrew Piraino and Jordan Johnson launched back-to-back long balls to go up 4-2.

Back on the mound for his third inning of work Lundh surrendered another two-run blast to tie the game.

The Weevils again went right back in front in the next frame on Johnson’s second round tripper of the game – a two-run shot over the left field wall.

Lundh gave up his third two-run blast in the bottom of the innings allowing the Bison to tie the score at 6-6.

UAM turned to Colby Adkins out of the bullpen to start the bottom of the fifth working the second scoreless frame for the Weevils pitching staff.

Borman put the Weevils back in the lead in the top of the sixth belting a two-run shot to left field.

In the bottom of the frame the Bison struck for two runs on three hits against Adkins to retie the game 8-8.

OBU took the lead in the eighth inning on a two-out solo home run to center field.

The Weevils put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth on a leadoff single by Hudson Hopkins, but he was left stranded as UAM ultimately lost the series finale 9-8.

UAM won the series two game to one after sweeping a doubleheader Saturday.

Six different Weevils had multiple hits in game three of the series with Johnson leading the way going 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI.

Borman and Piraino each added a long ball of their own in the contest driving in three and two runs, respectively.

Adkins (L, 2-3) took the loss allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six in 4.0 innings pitched in relief.

Lundh surrendered six runs on five hits across 4.0 innings as the starter.

Tyler Frank (W, 3-0) earned the win giving up two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings out of the bullpen.

April 27 Update: Tuesday’s game against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith has been canceled. UAM will be back in action on the diamond Friday and Saturday for a three-game series on the road against conference-rival Southern Arkansas. First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
