Jimmy Brown Elementary School art teacher Suzi Davis has been awarded an Arkansas Art Educators Presidents Foundation classroom grant.
Davis will use the $500 grant to fund an educational lesson for third through fifth graders to study the art of contemporary artist Sandra Silberweig, particularly her portrait series. Students will draw inspiration from Silberweig’s work to explore a sense of self and self-expression as they create their own self-portrait.
The grant will pay for the purchase of materials and art supplies needed for the lesson that will benefit over 300 students.
Davis is currently in her 30th year of teaching art, 24 of those years at Jimmy Brown Elementary in the Star City School District. She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The Arkansas Art Educators Presidents Foundation is a non-profit group dedicated to providing grants to art teachers in the state for art related supplies and classroom equipment.
Davis is the fourth art teacher to receive a grant from the Arkansas Art Educators Presidents Foundation since the grant program began.
