A Star City man escaped a possible death sentence Thursday when he pleaded guilty to capital murder in the June 2019 beating death of his 11-year-old stepson, Joseph Carsello.
David Black, 38, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Joseph’s mother, Mary Black, 30, still faces a possible death sentence if she is convicted. She is scheduled to go to trial in July.
David and Mary Black were both charged with capital murder last summer following Joseph’s death. An autopsy revealed that Joseph died from multiple blunt-force injuries. He had a lacerated liver, abdominal hemorrhaging, hemorrhaging of the pancreas, multiple scalp contusions, multiple impact sites on his head and torso, and bruising of his arms, legs, thighs, and buttocks.
