Five University of Arkansas at Monticello students have been inducted into the Alpha Nu Zeta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.
The new members are Hunter Bennett, a junior history major from Star City, Shana Chancellor, a senior biology and biochemistry major from Oak Leaf, Tex., Hunter Fowler, a junior political science and psychology major from Glenwood, Jalen Garmon, a junior history major from Little Rock, and Rodney Hill, a junior communication major from Oak Grove, La.
The induction ceremony was held at the Taylor House, an 1840s house on Hollywood Plantation near Winchester, Ark. The Taylor House is currently undergoing historical restoration by UAM. The members of Phi Alpha Theta heard presentations from Tommy Jameson of Jameson Architects, P.A.; Joan Gould of Preservation Matters; and Rick Parker of Parker Conservation,Inc., about the history of the Taylor House and the nature of the restoration and conservation work taking place on the property.
The initiation ceremony came at the end of a busy semester for the members of Phi Alpha Theta. The chapter engaged in two service projects – raising money for the Arkansas Special Olympics at the Polar Plunge in February, and renovating the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences conference room on the UAM campus. Members of the chapter also traveled to the Arkansas Regional Meeting of Phi Alpha Theta at Arkansas State University. Chapter Vice-President Dan Degges of Hamburg presented a paper titled “New Orleans’ Exploration of Nationhood.”
The Alpha Nu Zeta chapter has won the Best Chapter Award for Division II schools (with a student body size of 3,000-6,000) for each of the last six years. In the past year, the chapter also received the Nels A. Cleven Award, the highest honor that Phi Alpha Theta bestows on its chapters.
Membership in Phi Alpha Theta requires a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and completion of at least 12 credit hours in history. For more information, contact Dr. Clinton Young at (870) 460 1163.
