A Desha County man died in a shooting incident northeast of Dumas Saturday afternoon, according to State Police.
Travis Edward Ward, 40, of 650 Oakwood Bayou Road, died in the shooting.
A suspect in the shooting was questioned by State Police Special Agents and released at the direction of the county prosecuting attorney while the investigation continues. The suspect was not identified in a State Police news release.
“The suspect, a man acquainted with Ward and residing nearby along the same county road as Ward, was outside clearing brush Saturday when Ward reportedly charged toward the suspect wielding a knife,” the news release reads. “Desha County sheriff’s deputies reported to state police special agents that Ward had made repeated threats about killing the suspect last week.”
State Police CID agents recovered a gun and two knives found at the scene of the shooting, according to State Police.
Ward’s body is being transported to the State Crime Lab where the state medical examiner will determine the manner and cause of death.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues and agents are questioning family members and friends of both men.
Once complete, State Police will provide an investigative file to the Desha County prosecutor to determine whether criminal charges should be filed against the suspect.
