State Rep. Linda Collins-Smith, of Pocahontas, will be the guest speaker at the Drew County Republicans meeting at noon on Tuesday. The 49-year-old lawmaker announced in August that she is switching from the Democrat Party to Republican Party.
Collins-Smith said she was raised as a Democrat but believes the state party no longer has room for conservatives like her. She said Democrats have moved too far to the left for her to remain in the party. She singled out Democrats’ opposition to a capital gains tax cut that passed the House earlier this year but failed before a Senate committee, according to a Drew Counyt Republican Party news release.
“We are very excited to hear what Representative Collins-Smith has to tell us,” said Drew County Republican Party chairman Diana Harton. “We want to encourage everyone, regardless of party choice, to come and hear her story.”
The lunch meeting will be held in the hospitality room at the Holiday Inn in Monticello. The cost for lunch is $5 per person.
