A November trial date has been set for a Star City couple suspected in the June 2019 beating death of their 11-year-old son. If convicted, they could face the death penalty.

Joseph Corsello’s mother, Mary Black, 29, and stepfather, David Black, 38, both of Star City, were arrested on June 16 after the boy’s body was found at their residence on Spring Street in Star City.

Joseph died from multiple blunt-force injuries. He had a lacerated liver, abdominal hemorrhaging, hemorrhaging of the pancreas, multiple scalp contusions, multiple impact sites on his head and torso, and bruising of his arms, legs, thighs, and buttocks.

Both David Black and Mary Black are charged with capital murder. Prosecuting Attorney Kyle Hunter has filed notice that he would seek the death penalty due the “especially cruel or depraved manner” in which the murder was committed and because the couple knew that the child was especially vulnerable.

The couple reportedly beat Joseph, off and on, over a two-day period, beginning on June 15.

David Black is being held without bail in the Lincoln County jail. Mary Black is being held without bail in Arkansas County jail.
