UAM catcher Travis Steinke hit two homeruns and threw out three base runners to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team to a 13-10 win over Delta State on Tuesday in the 2016 home opener.
For the third time this season in the first four games, the Weevils (3-1) found themselves behind late in the game after Delta State (3-1) pounded out eight runs on six hits in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-3 lead.
UAM responded with eight runs of its own off of five hits and two Statesmen errors in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead at 11-9.
The Statesmen cut their deficit in half in the top of the eighth with one run off two hits, but UAM sophomore pitcher Dawson Moser quieted the rally with outs in his next four opposing batters, including retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth for his second save of the year.
Steinke finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with five runs batted in. He had a solo homerun to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning to put UAM up 2-1, had a two-run single in the seventh, and capped the best game of his career with a two-run homerun to left field in the eighth to finalize the scoring. He also threw out one baserunner in the fourth and two in the sixth, including one as a part of a strikeout-caught stealing double play.
UAM started the scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI fielder’s choice groundout by senior Corey Wood to score junior Nick Piraino, who walked earlier in the inning and moved to third on a single by senior Kevin Fitzpatrick.
The Statesmen got on the board in the top of the second on a solo homerun by Trent Giambrone to tie the game at one.
Following Steinke’s solo homerun in the fifth, the Weevils went up 3-1 in the sixth inning, taking advantage of the first of three Statesmen errors.
Senior Kregg Snook (1-0) earned the win in relief, giving up one run off one hit with one strikeout and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. DSU’s Bryant Johnston (1-1) took the loss with six runs allowed off three hits in only one-third of an inning.
The Weevils finished with at least one hit in all but one spot in the lineup. Fitzpatrick joined Steinke in a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-5.
UAM continues its five-game home stand this weekend with a three-game non-conference series against Minnesota State-Mankato, starting with a double-header on Friday, February 12 beginning at noon.
