University of Arkansas at Monticello junior baseball player Travis Steinke hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give the Weevils a 7-4 non-conference win over Harding on Tuesday at Weevils Field.
Redshirt freshman Brian Ray cut the deficit to one run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring sophomore Alex Smith, who walked earlier in the inning. Junior Corey Wood followed Ray’s sac fly by getting hit by a pitch to set the stage for Steinke’s grand slam game-winner. It was his fifth homerun of the season.
After four scoreless innings, Harding (23-19) struck first with one run in the top of the fifth inning before the Weevils (14-16) took the lead with one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, both coming with Brian Ray at the plate. The Crossett, Arkansas native had a successful squeeze bunt in the sixth and drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
The Bisons answered back in the eighth to regain the lead with a three-run homerun by Davis Richardson, the last runs scored until UAM’s five-run ninth.
Senior Jeff Harvill (1-2) earned the win in relief, keeping the Bisons scoreless on only one hit in the final 1.2 innings.
The Weevils are back in action this weekend at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State in a three-game Great American Conference series.
