Thomas Cooke Clarkson, 97, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Ashley County, died December 22, 2013, in the loving care of Tidwell Hospice House and with his daughter by his side. Graveside services and burial will April 12 at 11 a.m., at the Hamburg Cemetery with Rev. Greg Comer officiating.
Mr. Clarkson was born October 24 1916 in Hamburg and was the son of the late Thomas and Edith Norman Clarkson. He attended Hendrix College in Conway, and graduated from Tyler Commercial College in Tyler, Texas.
He served as a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. as a pilot during World War II.
Subsequently, he was vice president of sales for the Chemical Division of Georgia–Pacific Corp., formerly the Crossett Paper Company.
He was dedicated to community service having volunteered at Doctor’s Hospital and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department for over 25 years. He was a Presbyterian and he was an accomplished golfer and a great fan of the game. All who knew and loved Tom will remember him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death in 2009 by his wife of 74 years, Helen Nutter Clarkson.
He is survived by a daughter, Eydie Peacher of Sarasota, Fla.; grandson, Stephen Peacher and wife, Anne, of Weston, Massachusetts; a granddaughter, Alison Rusche and husband, Bill, of Bloomington, Indiana, and five great-grandchildren Nicholas, Thomas and Margaret Peacher and Jack and Katherine Rusche.
