Cade Thompson hit two home runs to lead the University of Arkansas in a high-scoring home opener Tuesday at Weevils Field. UAM defeated West Alabama 12-11.
Thompson went 2-for-4 with two home runs, the first, a lead-off solo shot to left oppo-taco fashion and the other, a two-run shot to deep right center. Both homeruns were on the first pitch of the at-bat. Thompson had four RBIs and scored three runs.
Chase Cripps and Reece Reading also had homeruns in the game. Cripps hit a two-out jack in the bottom of the third and a two-run triple down the right field line in the fourth, ending the day 2-for-5 at the plate with a run and three RBIs. Reading led off the bottom of the fifth with a towering shot that cleared the fence in right-center field. He finished his day at the going 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and an RBI.
Orlando Arevalo and Trevor Rugg each had an RBI in the fourth. Arevalo hit an RBI double to deep center and Rugg gained his RBI from a sac-fly.
The UAM pitching staff had its work cut out for them, totaling eight different pitchers in the game. Mason Philley started on the mound, pitching one inning allowing one run on one hit. The left-hander stuck out one batter and had zero walks.
Jacob McDaniel entered the game in the top of the second, pitching one inning allowing two runs allowed on three hits. The right-hander also struck out two batters and had zero walks.
Rigell Robinson took his turn on the mound in the top of the third, pitching one inning allowing one run on two hits.
Payton Mayatt, Jack Barna, Trent Bunting, and Cameron Johnson each pitched one inning for the Weevils, collectively allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Bunting struck out two batters and Johnson struck out three.
Charles Peacock (1-0) closed the last two innings, entering in the top of the eighth. The right-hander struck out two. He allowed one hit and one walk.
The victory pushes Arkansas-Monticello to 2-0 on the season.
Arkansas-Monticello heads to Houston, Texas later this week to play in the Houston Astros Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park. The Weevils face Central Missouri on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in their first game of the tournament.
