Tommy Barnes bust

The most successful football coach in the history of the University of Arkansas at Monticello was honored Saturday afternoon with the unveiling of a bronze bust of the late Tommy Barnes.

The bust was created by nationally-renowned sculptor David Deming of Cleveland, Ohio and made possible by a gift from former Boll Weevil football standout Lance Gasaway of Star City. Deming and Gasaway are pictured above at the unveiling ceremony.

The bust is located in the lobby of UAM’s indoor practice facility and honors a man who coached more seasons and won more games than any Boll Weevil football coach in school history.

Barnes was 69-53-1 in 12 seasons as head coach (1985-96) and led UAM to two appearances in the NAIA national playoffs as well as the 1993 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championship.
