Tommy Newman, a Monticello businessman, has announced that he will be a candidate for the Ward 2, Position 1 seat on the Monticello City Council in the March 1 Democratic Primary.
In a news release announcing his candidacy, Newman said he wants to “re-establish the communication between the City Council and the wishes of the people of Monticello.
“If elected, I plan to work diligently to serve the people of my ward and all of Monticello the best I can,” Newman said. “I would like to see our community improved. Our water and sewer infrastructure needs upgrading and needs to be at the top of our list.”
Newman owns and operates Newman Fixture Sales & Service and co-owner of Mid-Town Enterprises since 1973. He is a graduate of Monticello High School and the University of Arkansas at Monticello where he earned a B.S.E. degree.
Newman has served as vice president of the Monticello-Drew County Chamber of Commerce, coached pee-wee football and Little League baseball in past years, and teaches Sunday school at the First Baptist Church in Monticello.
He has been married to Phyllis Newman for 46 years and they have one son. Phyllis Newman taught school in the Monticello School District for 40 years and is retired.
