The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team has been selected fourth in the 2018 Great American Conference pre-season poll.
The Weevils are coming off a 33-21 (22-11 GAC) season that saw UAM win its second straight GAC Championship Tournament, and earned its second consecutive bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament. Arkansas-Monticello was ultimately downed in the regional by host Emporia State, and by Minnesota State-Mankato.
Arkansas-Monticello will see 24 total returners to the 2018 team, including seniors Brian Ray, Sean Wagner, Andres Rios, Brady Weiss, Austin Brakebill, and Gentry Ford in the field.
The UAM pitching staff will see ace Braden Chambers, and closer Dawson Moser return to the squad this season.
Ray returns this season after leading the Weevil offense with a .343 batting average, 43 runs batted in, 49 runs scored, and eight home runs. Wagner and Rios each provide UAM with even more offensive firepower after Sean posted 47 RBIs, and Andres had 44.
Chambers will anchor Arkansas-Monticello on the mound after leading the program with a 10-3 record last season, along with a team-high 81 strikeouts. Moser will aid the late game relief from the bullpen after recording seven saves in 19 appearances and posting a 1.26 earned run average.
UAM will kick-off the 2018 campaign against Pittsburg State in a three-game series starting Friday, February 2 in Monticello at Weevils Field. Arkansas-Monticello will then open GAC play starting Friday, February 16 in a three-game series against the Tigers of East Central in Monticello.
