Debate Team

The debate and forensics team at the University of Arkansas at Monticello won nine team and individual awards at last week’s Tennessee State University Music City Tournament in Nashville.

The Music City Tournament was divided into two tournaments with awards give for overall performance and for performance in each separate competition. UAM won the second place team award for overall competition and placed second in both individual competitions.

Individually, Breanna Taylor of North Little Rock was named the professional champion and third place professional speaker; Eddie Weaver of DeWitt was a semifinalist in varsity debate; April Wright of Conway was a quarterfinalist in varsity debate; BenGraves of Hot Springs was a quarterfinalist in novice debate; and Tanisha Smith of Crossett was the third place varsity debate speaker.

The tournament brought together debate and forensics teams from UAM, Western Kentucky University, the University of Alabama, Murray State University, Middle Tennessee State, Belmont, Union, the University of Tennessee, and Tennessee State.

Other UAM students participating in the competition were Gauge Adkins of Vilonia, Kaitlyn Lybrand of Sheridan, Felicia Ross of Little Rock, Emily Mendiola of Hamburg, Jacob Chisom of Monticello, Luke Beatty of McGehee, and William Rowe of Pine Bluff.
