The University of Arkansas at Monticello concluded its 2013 football season Saturday with a 44-20 loss to Southern Arkansas University in the second annual Battle of the Timberlands.
The Boll Weevils (5-6, 4-6 Great American Conference) scored on the game’s opening drive, capped by a nine-yard touchdown run from freshman quarterback Brett Courville. However, the Muleriders (6-4, 6-4 GAC) rattled off 17 straight points to take a 10-point lead, which was added onto with 20 SAU points in the fourth quarter.
The Weevils brought the game to within four points midway through the second quarter on an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown by junior Mike Early, which was the second longest punt return in UAM history.
Following Early’s big return, the Muleriders scored four unanswered touchdowns before UAM capped the scoring on a 14-yard touchdown run by sophomore Nick Williams, his only carry of the game.
SAU outgained UAM 448-205, including a 326-122 edge in rushing yards.
Courville led UAM with 16 carries for 68 yards, while junior Rod Smith added 13 carries for 55 yards. Junior Samel McClain led the UAM defense with a career-high 11 tackles. Junior Alex Back added 10.
Mark Johnson led the Muleriders with 42 carries for 219 yards and three touchdowns. Aarion Jones added 17 carries for 98 yards.
