The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team outlasted Great American Conference opponent Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon on the road in a double overtime win by a final score of 77-75.
The Weevils (15-2, 11-2 GAC) battled the Savage Storm of SOSU (8-11, 4-9 GAC) throughout the game as there were a total of 20 lead changes and 16 overall ties and neither team held its largest lead for over four minutes. UAM held a six point advantage after the opening half, leading Southeastern 31-25, but the host team countered with a six point second half advantage of its own.
One overtime period was not enough to decide a victor in this fierce contest as double overtime brought more of the same intensity between these two programs. Within the closing seconds junior guard Karim Mawuenyega connected on a driving lay-up to give the Weevils the two point lead, and the UAM defense went on to hold, not allowing the Savage Storm to get a shot off as time expired. Mawuenyega came up big earlier in this match-up also, as he knocked down a long range three that banked in with just under a minute remaining in the second half to tie up the game.
The Arkanas-Monticello offense was led by junior Cobe Goosby who totaled his fourth straight 20 plus point game with 21 against the Savage Storm on 8-for-17 shooting. Goosby turned in an impressive overall stat-line as well with six rebounds, six assists, and five steals.
Junior Derylton Hill totaled 18 points in the contest along with 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season. Karim Mawuenyega (14) and Tyrin Jones (12) each totaled double digit points in the game as well.
Final team stats on the afternoon for Arkansas-Monticello included 38 percent shooting from the field (26-for-69), 31 percent on treys (5-for-16), and 77 percent on foul shots (20-for-26). The Savage Storm finished the game shooting 48 percent (29-for-61) from the field, 29 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-24), and 56 percent from the charity stripe (10-for-18).
UAM will be back in action next on Thursday, February 2 as the Weevils will host the Rangers of Northwestern Oklahoma State in a GAC match-up slated for 7:30 p.m.
