The University of Arkansas-Monticello baseball team split a four-game series with Augustana University, this weekend at home.
The No. 21 ranked Weevils took the first game of a double-header on Saturday, edging No. 13 ranked Augustana Vikings, 5-4, before dropping the second game 4-1. In the Sunday double-header, UAM won the first game, 8-3. Augustana took the second game, 9-4.
Day 1, Game 1: UAM 5, Augustana 4
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Weevils scored four runs. The Vikings scored two runs in the seventh and added two more in the eighth, tying the game, 4-4. UAM won it in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4.
Day 1, Game 2: Augustana 4, UAM 1
Augustana scored runs in the first three innings, taking an early 4-0 lead. UAM managed a run in the sixth, a solo home run by Jordan Johnson, but ultimately fell 4-1.
Day 2, Game 1: UAM 8, Augustana 3
UAM scored runs in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings against Augustana. Jordan Johnson had a two-run home run in the first inning while Grant Shepard had a solo homerun in the second. Andrew Piraino increased UAM’s lead to 4-0 with an RBI single in the second inning. UAM scored its final four runs in the late innings on a couple of RBI’s singles, an RBI double and a bases loaded walk. Augustana scored a run in the sixth inning and added a two-run double in the eighth.
Day 2, Game 2: Augustana 9, UAM 4
Despite a good start with three runs in the first inning, UAM lost the final game of the series. UAM led Augustana, 3-1, after the first inning but Augustana put across another run in the second inning, decreasing UAM’s lead to 3-2. UAM maintained the 3-2 lead until the fourth inning when Augustana took advantage of two UAM errors adding four runs and taking the lead, 6-3. Augustana scored two more runs in the sixth, increasing its lead to 8-3. UAM cut the deficit to 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Grant Shepherd scored on a passed ball. Augustana scored the final run and won the game, 9-4.
Due to inclement weather, the game against with No. 9 Delta State has been postponed until March 11.
Also, the series against Harding University has been changed. The nine-inning contest originally scheduled for Friday, February 14, has been changed to Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m. and the doubleheader originally scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Sunday, February 16 at noon.
