The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team bounced back Saturday to sweep its doubleheader and win the series against Harding. The Weevils surrendered the first run in each game before shutting down the Bisons’ offense and heating up the bats to take game one 4-2 and game two 3-1.

UAM improves to 9-12 overall and 9-9 in Great American Conference games. Harding falls to 13-9 and 10-8 in league play.

Game One: UAM 4, Harding 2

UAM threatened to get on the board early putting at least one runner on base in each of the first three innings, but each time left them stranded.

River Hunt got the start for the Weevils in game one of the day and worked around runners on base in the first and second innings.

Harding struck in the third inning against Hunt plating one run on two hits to take the early lead.

The Weevils responded in the top half of the fifth when Andrew Piraino drove home Nick Fakouri with an RBI-groundout to knot the game at one.

Hunt settled in on the bump leaving runners stranded in the fourth and fifth before working a clean sixth inning.

In the top half of the sixth, UAM took its first lead on fielder’s choice by Fakouri that brought home Aaron Gaela.

The Weevils added another run in the seventh thanks to an error by the Bisons giving UAM a 3-1.

Harding opened the bottom of the frame with a leadoff double that sparked the Weevils to go to the bullpen bringing in Ojani Chacon to relieve Hunt. The Bisons ended up bringing in one run before Chacon closed out the inning.

Cole Muckleroy put UAM back up by two with an RBI-single in the top of the eighth.

Chacon returned to the mound to put down Harding in order in the eighth and ninth to secure the 4-2 win for the Weevils.

Hunt (W, 5-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Chacon (S, 2) earned the save dealing 3.0 scoreless frames while striking out three.

Ty Hoecker (L, 2-2) took the loss giving up four runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings pitched.

Game Two: UAM 3, Harding 1

Harding was first on the board in game two as well plating one run in the second inning against UAM starter Colby Adkins. However, Adkins would limit the damage in the frame leaving the bases loaded to hold the Bisons to just one run.

The top of the fourth was the difference in the game for the Weevils. Piraino worked a leadoff walk and was followed by a double by Jordan Johnson. Two hitters later Dylan Borman smashed the hit of the game launching a three-run home run to left center field to put UAM on top 3-1.

Adkins settled in on the mound holding Harding to just one hit over his final five scoreless innings.

The righty did face trouble in the bottom of the seventh when Harding put the tying run on base with one out, but Adkins got the next hitter to ground into a double play as the Weevils’ defense went around the horn to end the threat.

The Weevils held on to win the game 3-1 and take the series victory over Harding on the road.

Adkins (W, 1-1) earned the win in game two allowing just one run on five hits in 7.0 innings on the mound.

Carter McCall (L, 0-1) ended with the loss for Harding giving up three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings.
