The campus telephone system at the University of Arkansas at Monticello suffered a major failure on Sunday, knocking out all phone lines on the Monticello campus, according to Jay Jones, vice chancellor for finance and administration.

University officials were scrambling to restore partial service with a limited number of lines. A temporary digital phone system will offer 48 lines with an additional 24 lines for analog phones. The University’s Executive Council has identified the most critical areas for telephone and fax service per the listing below.

“We’re going to have to replace our current phone system,” said Jones, “and as part of the process, we’re going to have only a limited number of lines available to the campus until a new system is online. Individual office extensions will not be available since we will be limited to a maximum of 48 lines until the new system is installed.”

UAM officials have prioritized a list of lines to be available immediately. (See list at bottom) “We are asking for patience from our faculty, staff and students as well as our friends in the surrounding area as we work to solve this problem,” said Jones.

University officials hope to have the temporary system installed and operational as soon as possible.
