The Arkansas-Monticello baseball team took down No. 6 Henderson State, 9-8, in a 12 inning, comeback showdown Friday at Weevils Field in the first game of a three-game series.

After two scoreless innings, the Weevils (4-9, 2-5 GAC) were the scored in the bottom of the third when Grant Shepherd crushed a ball over the right center wall.

Henderson (14-1, 6-1 GAC) scored two runs in the top of the fourth, followed by six more in the top of the fifth to make it an 8-2 ball game.

UAM shortened the Reddies’ lead, 8-4, in the bottom of the sixth. Hudson Hopkins struck out to lead off the inning, but was able to reach first on a wild pitch. Clay Lockett ripped a single to center field, advancing Hopkins to second. Hopkins would eventually score off a sac fly from David Reyna, and Lockett scored off a Shepherd line drive to left field.

In the bottom of the eighth, UAM went on a tear, putting up five runs and tying the game, 8-8. Nick Fakouri led off the inning with a single to center, followed by a double down the left field line from Grant Shepherd to put two runners in scoring position. A Chase Cripps single and a handful of walks would eventually score him, Grant Shepherd, Nick Fakouri, and Jordan Johnson. David Reyna drove in Hopkins on a single down the right field line for the final run of the inning.

The game went into extra innings as both teams continued their conference battle. The Weevils eventually came out on top, 9-8, when Jordan Johnson scored off of an Orlando Arevalo single to right center.

Pitching Performances

Derek Potts started on the mound, pitching four innings. He allowed seven runs on seven hits, He stuck out six and allowed four walks.

Trent Bunting entered the game in the top of the fifth, pitching three innings allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four batters and had one walk.

Jack Barna entered in the top of the eighth, throwing 3.2 inning with no runs on two hits, and striking out four.

Rigell Robinson closed the game pitching the last 1.1 innings. He entered in the top of the eleventh, allowing no runs and no hits. He struck out two.

The Weevils will wrap up their GAC series with Henderson with a doubleheader Saturday at Weevils Field. First pitch is set for noon.
