After dropping two games (5-0) and (11-1) in a double-header Saturday against Minnesota State, the University of Arkansas-Monticello baseball team defeated Minnesota State in the series finale.

Due to weather conditions in Monticello, the first two games of the three-game series were played in Sterlington, Louisiana. In the final game, the Weevils returned home where they defeated the Mavericks 9-7.

Minnesota State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but UAM answered in the bottom half of the inning when junior center fielder Nathaniel English scored on a fielder’s choice.

Minnesota State scored a run in the second inning and another in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. UAM closed the gap in the bottom of the third inning when junior left fielder Elijah Celaya sent a solo shot over the left center fence.

The Weevils then took a 8-3 lead, scoring four runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning.

English scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. A sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Kaleb Wardern, a double by senior designated hitter Brodie Threet, and a single by senior catcher Andrew Piraino added three more runs in the fifth inning. Sophomore third baseman Jordan Johnson brought home two more on a single in the sixth inning.

Minnesota State fell short in an attempted comeback, scoring one run in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth. Entering the bottom of the eighth, UAM was still up by two runs, 8-6.

UAM scored another run in the bottom of the eighth when senior outfielder John Mauldin doubled home English, increasing UAM’s lead, 9-6. Minnesota State got one more across on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning.

Freshman left-hander Mason Philley (1-0) picked up the win for UAM after coming in at the beginning of the sixth inning and working two innings. Philley gave up one run on one hit. He struck out one and walked two.

At the plate, Jordan Johnson went 3-for-5, with two RBI and one run. Nathaniel English went 3-for-4, with two doubles, a walk, and four runs. Grant Shepherd went 2-for-4 and scored one run. Elijah Celaya went 1-for-2, with a walk, an RBI, and two runs, including a homerun.
