Varnell E. Lee, Jr. 95, of McGehee, Arkansas passed away late in the evening of April 28, 2014 at the McGehee Hospital.
He was born at Winchester on October 29, 1918 and was the son of the late Varnell E. Lee Sr. and Bertha Chapman Lee. He was was the grandson of Desha County pioneer, Dan G. Lee.
Mr. Lee left McGehee when the Missouri Pacific Railroad round house was closed in the 1950s. After living in Louisiana and Mississippi, Varnell returned to McGehee where he owned and operated the Desha Tile Company for decades.
He was active in the First Methodist Church where he served on the board of directors. He was Past Master of the Desha Masonic Lodge 643 and was a 32nd degree Mason.
Mr. Lee was a devoted husband and father of four sons and a daughter.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine McAfee Lee.
He is survived by his children, Varnell M. Lee and wife Sarah of Pittsboro, NC, Dan Lee and wife Terri of Arkansas City, Sharon Towles of Parkin, Charles H. Lee and wife Linda of Watson,Christopher Lee and wife Dwana of McGehee. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Visitation is May 5 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Griffin Culpepper Funeral Service in McGehee.
Funeral services will be held May 3 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of McGehee with Rev. Joe Head and Rev. Kenny Shaw officiating. Burial to follow at Tillar Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Allen Evans, Frank Evans, Lloyd Evans, Keith Lee, Jay Hardin, David Binns, and Robert Nichols .
