Velma Ruth Staton Hill, 86, departed this life on October 18, 2017 in Dumas.

She was born July 16, 1931 in Lonoke to the late, James Daniel Staton and Daisy Loucinda North Staton.

Velma was a long-time resident of Dumas and a member of Hopedale Missionary Baptist Church of Winchester and Ladies Auxiliary at Hopedale Missionary Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Velma ran track and still holds the long jump and 100-yard dash records for Lonoke High School. Her parents and two brothers, Fred Staton and Paul Daniel Staton preceded her in death.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Norfleet (Ted) Lafayette Hill, of Dumas; three sons, Douglas Norfleet Hill (Sandy) of Lonoke, Randy Lamar Hill (Melody) of Carlisle, and James “Tuffy” Hill (Dawne) of Dumas; one daughter, Janet Lin Hill Moore (Carter) of Dumas; 11 grandchildren, Abby Hill Smith, Melissa Lin Moore, Anell Hill Meeks, William Curtis Moore, Douglas Lance Hill, Natalee Hill McGill, Lenzie Hill Carpenter, James Daniel Hill, Phillip Wade Hill, Lorin Hill Geisler, Kristen Hill Siegerist, and twenty great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Macel Staton Lassiter of Lonoke and Mary Lou Measels (Gerald) of Searcy and a sister-in-law, Joyce Staton.

Pallbearers are her grandsons, William Curtis Moore, Douglas Lance Hill, James Daniel Hill, Phillip Wade Hill, and her nephews, Tim Lassiter and Mark Staton. Honorary pallbearers are her great grandsons, Staton Grant Smith, Preston Blake Meeks, Richard Logan Smith, Benjamin “Quinn” Karr and her nephews, Mike Staton and Ricky Lassiter.

Visitation and service will be held on Saturday, October 21 Hopedale Missionary Baptist Church at Winchester. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. Rev. Woody Evans will officiate. Burial will be at Legate Cemetery in Lonoke.
