Vernon Joseph Clifton, 96, of Wilmot, died December 10, 2020 in Lake Village.
Mr. Clifton was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He was a cotton, soybean and rice farmer, a member of the Wilmot Church of Christ, a former mayor of Wilmot, former board member of the Farmer’s Home Administration, and retired from the Wilmot Fire Department. He believed in God Almighty and lived it every day.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, L.V. Metheny Clifton in 2003; his parents, John and Velora Vines Clifton; a brother, John Earl Clifton and a sister, Alma Clifton Davis.
He is survived by his children, Dawna Whitehead, Darrell Clifton and wife, Janet, all of Wilmot, Bonita Herrington and husband, Mike, of Mountain View and Clifford Clifton of Wilmot; a sister, Clara Clifton Lovelady of Beech Grove; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Clifton and wife, Missy, of Rogers, Richard Clifton and wife, Rebecca, of Prairie Grove, Danny Cannon and wife, Amanda, of Bella Vista, John Whitehead of Little Rock, Beth Brown of Wilmot, Dawn Cannon of Fayetteville and April Carpenter and husband, Josh, of Hot Springs; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 12, at 2 p.m. at the Wilmot Cemetery with Bro. Carlos Pitts officiating. Visitation will be Saturday 1:45 – 2 p.m. at the cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are Dennis Gregory, Jeff Clifton, Nolan Whitehead, Richard Clifton, George Utnage, Cayce Stock, Richard Stock, James Crossley and Jackson Currie.
