Jury selection begins Tuesday in the sentencing trial of a Drew County woman who pleaded guilty to permitting the abuse that led to the death of her 2-year-old daughter.

Victoria Pedraza, 23, was charged with capital murder in the February 2012 beating death of Aubriana Coke but subsequently pleaded guilty to permitting the abuse that led to the toddler’s death.

She admitted that she saw her husband deliver the blows that caused her daughter’s death and failed to take action to prevent that abuse.

Testifying for the state in Daniel Pedraza’s murder trial last month, Victoria Pedraza described the systematic physical and emotional abuse the toddler was subjected to prior to her death.

In exchange for her testimony at Daniel Pedraza’s trial and her guilty plea to permitting the abuse, the state dropped the murder charge. A jury will hear evidence from witnesses for the prosecution and defense then determine her sentence. She faces 5 to 20 years in prison and a fine of $15,000.

Jury selection is set to begin Tuesday morning in Drew County Circuit Court.
