Washington “Shorty” Humphrey, Sr., 89, of Dermott, passed away on November 3, 2019.
He was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on November 26, 1929 to the late James and Matilda Jackson Humphrey.
Mr. Humphrey worked for Downey Funeral Home for more than 30 years. He helped facilitate the Rural Water Association for Hurds, Arkansas and was recognized by U.S. Rep. Jay Dickey for his efforts. He also enjoyed sponsoring fish frys for the community for 20 years. He loved to grow flowers and work in his garden.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vernestine Simpson Humphrey; son, Washington Humphrey, Jr.; daughters, Berlin V. Smith and Linda Fay Humphrey; grandson, Tyron Fernando Humphrey.
Survivors include his sons, Willie Earl (Bobbie) Humphrey of Little Rock and Joseph Lee Humphrey of Dermott; daughter, Ruby Jewel (Rev. Henry) Dickerson of Dermott; loving daughter in-law, Ella Humphrey; sister, Mabell Beasley of Detroit, Michigan; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Halley, with Rev. Henry Dickerson officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery.
