The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team came up short Tuesday in a mid-week game with Delta State University. The Weevils fell to the Statemen, 6-5.
Delta State scored a run in the top of the first, another in the fourth, and four more runs in the top of the sixth. Taking a 6-0 lead through seven innings.
UAM found their stride in the bottom of the eighth inning when Grant Shepherd led off the inning with a home run to right center, followed by a Chase Cripps single to left center. Cripps eventually scored on a Jordan Johnson single to center field.
The Weevils scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth. Chase Cripps reached first on an error, followed by three consecutive walks, and scoring the first run of the inning. Jordan Johnson and Cade Thompson scored on a Clay Lockett single to left field to shorten the Delta State lead to 6-5. It would prove to be not enough as Monticello would close out the game 6-5.
Cameron Johnson started on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings with one run allowed on one hit. The right-hander stuck out five batters and had one walk.
Jack Barna entered the game in the top of the third, pitching 1.1 inning with one run allowed on one hit. He struck out two batters and had one walk.
Charles Peacock entered in the top of the fifth, throwing one inning and allowing four runs. He had 3 walks and 2 HBPs.
Jacob McDaniel closed out the last two innings. He entered in the top of the eighth. The right-hander struck out two, allowed one walk and one hit.
Clay Lockett: 2-for 4 with 2 RBI.
Jordan Johnson: 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Grant Shepherd: 1-for-3 with a home run to right center and a stolen base.
Reece Reading: 1-for-3 with a double.
Arkansas-Monticello will host Henderson State University this weekend in a three game, Great American Conference series. The first game is set for Friday at 2 p.m. The series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader.
