The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team was unable to slow Harding’s nation-best rushing offense, which racked up 474 yards on the ground to defeat the Boll Weevils 63-30 on Saturday at First Security Stadium.

Despite the loss, a pair of Weevils etched their names into the record books. Senior Jamal Nixon broke the UAM single-game record with 214 kickoff return yards on six attempts, while freshman kicker Jamie McGee tied his own UAM and Great American Conference single-game record with three made field goals.

After Harding (4-1, 4-1 GAC) went up 7-0 on the opening drive, Nixon returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards, which eventually set up a 29-yard field goal from McGee. McGee also had field goals of 33 and 21 yards in the loss to increase his season total to 12, moving him into second place at UAM for field goals made in a season. McGee is three field goals away from tying the UAM single-season record.

UAM (3-3, 3-3 GAC) 49-13 in the first half, but responded by scoring 17 second-half points while holding the Bisons to 14. In addition to McGee’s field goals in the first half, UAM also reached the scoreboard on a 12-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by junior George Alvarez at the 9:10 mark of the first quarter to give UAM a 10-7 lead.

UAM junior running back Rod Smith was responsible for the only score of the third quarter with a five-yard touchdown run to cap a seven-play, 42-yard drive with 2:38 remaining in the period.

Smith added another rushing touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to finalize the scoring. Smith finished the game with 33 carries for 85 yards.

Harding outgained UAM 582-350. The Bisons scored eight rushing touchdowns and finalized their scoring with a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The Bisons averaged 9.4 yards per play.

UAM went with three quarterbacks for the fourth time this season. Sophomore Cody Trimble was 8-of-17 for 85 yards and one interceptions, sophomore Colton Morrison was 7-of-13 for 84 yards and freshman Brett Courville was 2-of-7 for 39 yards. Courville added 27 rushing yards on nine carries.

Junior Skyler Scott was the favorite target with five receptions for 95 yards. Sophomore Trey Taylor added five catches for 70 yards.

The Weevils return to Monticello for the next three weeks, starting next Saturday, October 19 for the only non-conference game of the 2013 season. UAM welcomes Lindenwood University of Belleville, Illinois to Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
